O Prof. Dr. João Espregueira-Mendes - Clinical Director of Clínica Espregueira | FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence - publishes a book on Sports Medicine and Sports Injury Prevention entitled "The Sports Medicine Physician". The book is published by the world-accredited Springer Publishing and counted with the collaboration of about a hundred international authors. In this book, our team published two chapters on primary and secondary prevention of sports injuries and return to competition after sports injury.
The chapter "Sport Injury Primary and Secondary Prevention"
Written by Rogério Pereira, Renato Andrade, Alexandre Rebelo-Marques and João Espregueira-Mendes, it covers the research done in the last 30 years on primary and secondary prevention of sports injuries.
The chapter explores intrinsic and extrinsic, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, injury mechanisms, exposure to risk factors, multimodal prototypes of primary prevention (these often include muscle strengthening, motor control development, pliometrics, mobility, among others) and how these should be implemented in practice and adjusted to the context (with examples focused on anterior cruciate ligament, ankle sprain, muscle injury, and pubertalgic condition).
The chapter "Return to Play"
Written by Alexandre Rebelo-Marques, Renato Andrade, Rogério Pereira and João Espregueira-Mendes addresses the rehabilitation process, physical and motor reconditioning, and physical and psychological criteria that the athlete must meet before returning to sports competition. Specific return-to-competition data is provided for several sports injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament injury, meniscal and cartilage injury of the knee, muscle injuries, shoulder dislocations and rotator cuff tears, injury to the lateral ankle ligaments and patellar dislocation.
In the primary and secondary prevention of football injuries and in second edition of the course on primary and secondary prevention of shoulder injuries many of the contents that make up this book will be developed, particularly the chapters written by the Clínica Espregueira team.
