What did the study consist of?
A prospective double-blind placebo randomized controlled study that evaluated the effects of pulsatile electromagnetic therapy - Pulsed Signal Therapy (PST) - in patients with painful joint syndrome patellofemoral associated with patellar chondropathy. The study included 25 patients (41 knees) aged between 20 and 50 years who were randomized to the PST group and the control group and followed for 12 months. The PST group received nine 60 min treatment sessions with PST. The control group received placebo treatment (blinded) with the same protocol. After 3 months of treatment, if the efficacy of PST was proven, the patients in the control group would also receive effective treatment (post-treatment placebo).
And what results have been achieved?
- At month three, the PST group exhibited a mean change 9.63 points on the Kujala scale compared to 0.53 in the placebo group (P<0.001).
- A significant progressive improvement was observed in the PST group between month 3 and 6 and between month 6 and 12 (P<0.016).
What did we learn from this work?
- PST therapy in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome associated with patellar chondropathy was effective compared to placebo at 3 months, showing significant improvement on the Kujala scale. The beneficial effect was progressive and maintained until 12 months.
- PST is safe, effective and should be considered as a non-invasive option for the treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome associated with patellar chondropathy.
