What did the study on the treatment of Spondylosis consist of?

A systematic review of the literature that aimed to analyze the rate of athletes who have resumed sports activities and the time required for sports resumption after conservative or surgical treatment in athletes with spondylosis.

Fourteen studies involving a total of 592 participants were included in this review. Eight studies reported the results of conservative treatment and seven studies the results of surgical treatment after failure of conservative treatment.

And what results have been achieved?

    • After the conservative treatment of spondylosis, 92% of the athletes returned to sports activities (89% at the pre-injury level) in an average of 4.5 months.
    • When the conservative treatment of spondylosis failed, the surgical option returned 88% of the athletes to sports activity (81% at the pre-injury level) in approximately 7 months.

What did we learn from this work?

  • The conservative treatment of spondylosis (orthotics, modification or temporary cessation of sports activity, and physical therapy treatment) should be the first line of treatment in athletes with spondylosis. It has proven effective in getting most athletes back to the same competitive level in just over 4 months.
  • When conservative treatment fails (worsening or persistence of symptoms, or even evolution to spondylolisthesis), surgical intervention is an effective option that allows athletes a high success rate for sports resumption.
