The Postgraduate Course in Athletics - Specialization in Trail Running, developed in partnership between the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and Academia Clínicas Espregueira, offers a unique opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the field of sport and health. This course aims to create a technical-scientific benchmark at postgraduate level, enabling professionals in the sports sciences, physical education, human motricity and health sciences to work effectively and innovatively in the field of trail running, in accordance with the vision and principles established by World Athletics.

The curricular structure, made up of 13 units, is carefully designed to promote the development of essential behaviors, knowledge and skills in the context of athletic training and development. 

The curricular units include:

  • Athletics and Trail RunningExploration of the various modalities and their specificities.
  • Structure, Function and Applied Biomechanics: Detailed study of body mechanics and their practical application.
  • Injury Prevention and RobustnessStrategies to prevent injuries and increase the strength of athletes.
  • Athletic Performance: Evaluation and Measurement: Evaluation methods and athletic performance metrics.
  • Nutrition: Nutritional and Dietary Assessment and PlanningFood and nutrition planning to optimize health indicators and performance.
  • Training Prescription in Athletics and Trail Running: Science-based guidelines for the safe and effective creation of training plans and periodization.
  • Psychology and PerformancePsychological impact on athletic performance and improvement techniques.
  • Monitoring and Usability of Training Platforms: Using technology to monitor and improve training.
  • Extreme Environments: Health and Performance Guidelines: Preparation and adaptation to extreme conditions.
  • Athletic Equipment for Safety, Training and PerformanceChoice and proper use of sports equipment.
  • Doping and Legislation: Understanding of anti-doping rules and current legislation.
  • Laboratory and Field Practical Component: Assessment, Prescription and Monitoring: Meticulously planned practical sessions in laboratory, track and mountain contexts.

OBJECTIVES

  General Objectives: To develop behaviors, knowledge and skills within a technical-scientific framework for training and coaching in Athletics and Trail Running. This course is aimed at graduates in sports science, physical education, human motricity, athletes who meet the application requirements and other life sciences and health professionals interested in working in these contexts. The aim is to provide solid theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical training that will enable trainees to work more safely and effectively in the education and training of athletes in Athletics and Trail Running.
  Regulation and Impact: Recognize, evaluate and develop an understanding of the regulatory matrix, as well as the socio-economic and sporting impact of Athletics and Trail Running.
  Biomechanical Assessment and Training Prescription: Identify and design biomechanical assessment and training prescription interventions, ensuring safety and effectiveness in the development of physical, motor and psychosocial skills in different contexts.
  Digital Training Monitoring: Evaluate and carry out the prescription and monitoring of training through digital platforms, optimizing the monitoring and periodization of athletes' training.
  Safety in Extreme Environments: Implementing measures to ensure safety and proper qualification for training and competition in extreme environments.
  Training Equipment: Evaluate and use materials and equipment that promote safety, training quality and athletic performance.
  Sports Science, Nutrition and Health: To develop and apply behaviors, knowledge and skills in these areas, specifically adapted to Athletics and Trail Running athletes, promoting a safe and effective training paradigm.
  Supplements and Doping Substances: Identify and evaluate the health, regulatory and performance effects of supplements and doping substances.
  Organization and Marketing: Developing organizational and marketing skills in the context of developing athletes, brands and events in Athletics and Trail Running.

CANDIDATES

Candidates must hold a university degree. Candidates who do not have this requirement may be admitted if their professional background and knowledge justify it.
The process of selection and ranking of candidates will always be based on curricular and professional assessment, taking into account the order of entry of the respective applications.

PRACTICAL CLASSES

40 hours of laboratory, track and mountain practice, concentrated over two 2.5-day periods (Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings). The sessions will be held at UTAD's facilities and in the Serra do Marão, in Vila Real.
